Pettrailers are dog/handler teams that are specially trained to search for animals.

Some trackers are trained to find animals in addition to finding people (mantrailing). Every animal has an individual scent, which is spread by small particles and scales. The search dogs can thus pick up and follow the scent trail. For this the dog needs an object, which holds if possible exclusively the smell of the looked for animal. For example, brushes, sleeping pads, toys or collars are suitable. The fresher the scent, the greater the chance of success. Therefore, owners should ask for help as early as possible.
